I had a design thinking boot camp with Big Motive on Saturday morning and they took us through many processes and design principles.
User testing allows you to iterate upon your designs to improve and define them. The more people you user test your product with then the more feedback you will get and the more patterns you will see. This can be a continuous cycle before launch. Even once your product is launched, you can still come back to this process to make improvements. A visual representation of these processes can be seen below:
